Fast food

I am not a big fan of fast food, except for places like Subway, Quiznos and Jimmy John’s. I know what you’re probably thinking…they’re all sandwich places and are not always the healthiest. You’re right – kind of.

At Subway, I can order the chicken breast sandwich minus the cheese and mayo, of course. Or the ham and turkey sandwich. And, I always order my sandwiches on the wheat bread. I am not sure of the actual calorie or fat content, but I know the sandwiches that I eat are only 6 or 7 Weight Watcher points. If I order the baked Lays plain potato chips, which really are good, I have to add another two points.

At Quiznos, I get the small honey bourbon chicken sandwich (no cheese or mayo) on wheat bread and it is only 6 WW points. Again, if I add a bag of chips, I add an extra two points. This is probably one of the more flavorful sandwiches I order at a fast food joint.

My favorite place for a sandwich, though, is Jimmy John’s, which is surprising because I strongly dislike the bread. BUT – I love and I mean love, the Unwich! You can order any of the sandwiches at Jimmy John’s in an Unwich, which is a sandwich wrapped in a lettuce leaf. No bread. Yeah! I always order the #4 Turkey Tom with no mayo or cheese and I add cucumbers and avocado spread. Point value for that particular Unwich? A whopping two. Yep, 2 WW points for a whole sandwich. I definitely add a bag of baked chips when I eat at Jimmy John’s.

And yes, I know, I can eat a salad at other fast food places, but you have to be careful. Salads, although they sound healthy for you, can turn out to be extremely fattening. Especially if you have cheese, croutons, bacon bits and a creamy-style dressing, such as ranch. I think some people would be really surprised by how many calories and fat grams are in some fast food salads.

I haven’t eaten at a Taco John’s, Arby’s, Hardees or McDonald’s for quite some time. And as for Burger King…I don’t think I have been to one since I worked there as a teenager. I really dislike BK. Sorry to those who love it. The smell is what really gets me. It seriously makes me nauseous. Sorry.

There is one place, however, that I haven’t been to in a long time that I have been meaning to try – or at least look up some of the items on its website to see if the claims on its latest television ads are true.

You guessed it. Taco Bell. A while ago, Taco Bell aired television ads about its "new" diet drive-thru menu. The ads made it appear that people who were "dieting" could eat there and lose weight. In my opinion, the ads were a little cheesy and a little far-fetched. I mean seriously, Taco Bell as "diet food." Whatever.

Well, I finally took the time to check out their website and the nutritional information on their "diet" fresco menu items. Here’s what I found:

Fresco Crunchy Taco: 150 calories, 7 grams of fat and 3 grams of fiber – 3 WW pts.
Fresco Soft Taco (beef): 180 calories, 7 grams of fat and 3 grams of fiber – 4 WW pts.
Fresco Burrito Supreme (chicken): 340 calories, 8 grams of fat and 8 grams of fiber – 7 WW pts.
Fresco Burrito Supreme (steak): 330 calories, 8 grams of fat and 8 grams of fiber – 6 WW pts.
Fresco Ranchero Chicken Soft Taco: 170 calories, 4 grams of fat and 2 grams of fiber – 3 WW pts.
Fresco Grilled Steak Soft Taco: 160 calories, 4.5 grams of fat and 2 grams of fiber – 3 WW pts.
Fresco Bean Burrito: 340 calories, 8 grams of fat and 11 grams of fiber – 7 WW pts.

And just in case you felt like having nachos, I would suggest avoiding the Volcano Nachos, which has 1,000 calories, 62 grams of fat and 16 grams of fiber. A whopping 24 WW pts.

My suggestion is that if you want to eat out at a fast food restaurant, do it. BUT, check out the restaurant’s website before you go. Most of them have their nutritional facts listed. I bet it will be quite the eye-opening experience. It was for me!

P.S. Yes, it’s another reminder – Confessions of a Fat Girl is on Facebook. Check it out. Become a fan! I’d really appreciate it. Really, I would! Thanks!
